Ya, it's been a while since I posted anything. I've been suffering from what today's post will be about; Gaming Burnout.
The last gaming I participated in was waaaay back in May for 'Ard Boyz round 2. I went in knowing that I had no chance at placement, so I just played spoiler. Two minor losses and a draw later my mission was accomplished. No one I played placed higher than, I think, 6thish. The whole experience of the tournament just left a rancid taste in my mouth though. I didn't really enjoy any of my games, and by the time the third one was starting I was completely disgusted with the whole scene. I was in fact so burnt out on gaming of any kind that I didn't even paint a mini for two months. Only in the last few days have I managed to pick up the paintbrush again.
The sad part of all of this burn out is that a good friend of mine has a fantastic idea for a scenario battle that will require a ton of work both in rules and with scenery. It really is an awesome idea though so I'm trying to pull myself out of the funk for it. We're gonna try to have it take up 24 feet of table with all kinds of kool stuff going on the whole time. If it does get off the ground we'll have battle reports for sure.
Now all of this has led me to an inescapable conclusion; I hate tournaments. they are awful, horrid, despicable excuses for gaming. There is nothing FUN happening at tournaments. It always reminds me of card players foaming at the mouth over rules and feigned politeness after a soul-crushing defeat. Army after army of unpainted 'silver surfers' with no variation in any lists. No fluff, just sheet after sheet of army builder lists.
So all I can say is this. If you don't want to get burn out of gaming, don't do what you hate. Enjoy the aspects of the game that you enjoy. Don't play a game that you won't have the slightest bit of fun in.
Thats all for now, hopefully this post will also help to alleviate the funk surrounding me and get my ass back to work on the 30 more Eternal Guard I have to finish.
What we're about.
We are a Toledo Ohio area gaming group. We mostly deal with miniature wargames such as Warhammer Fantasy, but we will occasionally delve into the areas of roleplaying or even video gaming. Many of our posts will deal with Warhammer, but we'll most likely throw a curve ball at you occasionally. While we don't always agree on everything we do all work toward the same goal; have fun.
We will do our best to offer advice, insight, ideas, and hopefully a small bit of comedy on how to make your games a better experience.

2nd Place at 'Ard Boyz.
Ok, so here's what I was running:
TMA- AoN, CoR, LoD, MoS 425
Alter Highborn- Spirit Sword, Helm Of The Hunt, Fimbulwinter 286
Treeman 285
Treeman 285
6 Treekin- Elder 410
20 Dryads- Nymph 252
11 GG- BoEF
Level 2 Wiz- DMS
Noble BSB- Asyendi's, HoDA 434
10 GG- Standard 132
10 Scouts- Standard 182
9 Scouts- Standard
Noble- Hunters Talon, Pageant of Shrikes 309
Game 1, Dwarves- I won in a massacre. He had 4 gyrocopters, but 2 were reserves so I only had to really deal with 2 of 'em. Alter made his way down the side and flanked damn near everything. I basically pushed hard on left flank and forced his hammerer and clansmen unit to spin around in circles the whole game until I was ready to pounce on 'em. Dryads knocked out a unit of slayers and longbeards that came on in reserves. Total was 27- 2 in VP's.
Game 2, Skaven- Drayads with a blood soaked choppa are without a doubt the most dangerous unit on the board this game. They took care rather easily the plague monk/ furnace unit and then went back to my deployment zone and killed off a night runner (the tunneler/ infiltrators) unit. GG made short work of one Abom. Treeman kept the other one busy the whole game. This was probably the most bloody game I have ever played with a wood e'f army. There were turns where I actually had 6 units in combat at once, which is not normal for my WE playstyle. I pulled a major victory out here, would have been a massacre if my TMA hadn't died at the end of the 5th turn. Total was 20- 5.
Game 3, WoC- His whole army was 3 infantry units and 2 warshrines. If the game had actually gone past the 4th turn I think I would have pulled out a rather nice victory. I was basically leading him around the battlefield by the nose. But I was just starting to get units into attacking positions when turn 4 ended and we rolled the 3+ to end the game. We ended in a draw with total VP's 11- 11.
I ended up in 2nd due to a first round bye that one of the other WoC armies picked up and my early game ending in a draw. He got 20 VP's for his first round bye and the other two games he managed to get 17+ vp's. He had a fairly solid WoC list, but if he had played his first game in place of the guy that ended up dropping after first round due to getting his VC army pounded into very small pieces. He most likely wouldn't have grabbed 20 VP's. I'm happy with 2nd though, it gets me into next round. The other two that advanced were of course the incredibly undercosted WoC armies. If no one comes into town here to play next round we'll end up in a round-robin to decide 1st through 3rd and I'll just have to build one army to deal with 2 WoC armies that are virtually identical. Changes I would have made in hindsight are; I would have made the alter a BoL/ bodkin machine gunner. spirit sword was nice, but there was just a ton of armor out there. Hunter's Talon/ PoS noble wasn't worth it. I had expected to see some more Teclis armies, so he was my Teclis sniper. Hunter's Talon is fairly ineffective against anyone else really. My original version of this list had 2 TMA and 2 TM. It was nasty if you got all them on the same unit, but it was to vulnerable to a nasty crackscall or some such madness so I grabbed the alter instead.

Battle Report
By Jay:
A friend of mine called me up the other day and said he had a 3K Skaven army that he was looking to take to 'Ard Boyz. He'd played two games with it and had fared pretty well. Beat up on some orcs and some VC with it. I couldn't possibly go without trying to take down a Skaven army, mostly because I can't fucking stand those little bastards. GW has one original idea and they have to make it the most over-the-top, undercosted army possible. But I digress. Armed with my severe distaste for all things rat infested, I pulled out the army I'm thinking about playing at 'Ard boyz:
Wood Elf 3000 points-
I didn't keep the list around so I'm gonna try to do this from memory.
Alter lord w/ spirit sword, helm of the hunt, some silly ass armor
Level four mage w/ wand of wych elm, moonstone, fear blade
Branchwraith w/ Cluster of radiance
BSB w/ asyendi's bane, hail of doom arrow
38 Glade guard w/ FC and banner of eternal flame
10 dryads w/ FC (such as it is)
6 treekin w/ elder
1 treeman
10 scouts
10 waywatchers
2 giant eagles
10 wardancers w/ FC
We rolled up watchtower scenario which is good because I'd have been screwed on a blood and glory. I won the roll and tossed my dryads in the tower. Prolly should have let them just run into it and rolled for first turn, but I wanted to keep it as long as possible. I managed to get a bane stone placed on his table half 7" away from the tower, so he was not to keen on running anything up on it.
He was running a huge stormvermin brick with characters for days in it. Thanquol, bsb, general, another level 1, and I think another hero in there, plus an assassin that never popped out. his only other big unit was a unit of 30 or so slaves, and a tunnel team of about 25 guys. Most of what he had out there was doomwheel, abom, rat swarms, giant rat pack, war machines and weapon teams. It's always a pain for me to get up on those types of armies with Wood Elves due to having troops that cost so friggin much.
First turn. I had to forfeit going first due to taking the tower. He right off the bat 13th spelled my waywatchers, then warp lightning'd my scouts. Scouts managed to live with 6 or so of 'em left, but the damage was done. Already I'm down a 230 point unit, not to mention the 10 or so losses from the war machines on my GG block. I managed to get my scouts to make their charge on the lightning cannon over on his flank (which of course took them 3 combat rounds to kill off) but otherwise no real discernible damage on my part.
Second Turn. Having moved my treekin and treeman up towards his huge block they took a lot of his attention. He started to move units toward them and tried creeping his doomwheel up the left side of the table where all I had were my wardancers and alter lord. He had the slaves closer to the wheel than my stuff though, so he couldn't get a good lightning shot off. His catapult and 1 lightning cannon misfired and both exploded much to my delight. My turn was fairly uneventful. I crept my alter lord up behind the tower, and started moving the wardancers across the field now that they had no catapult to kill off. Dryads made short work of the rat swarms that had charged the tower.
Turn three. Shit started hitting the fan this turn. We both had fairly crappy magic phase rolls, but the numbers in our respective units were starting to dwindle from random acts of ranged violence. The real damage was done in my magic phase. I got a Dwellers Below off on his stormvermin unit that ate up Thanquol and his level 1 mage along with a good 25 stormvermin.
Turn four. With his magic force decimated I pretty much managed to mop up the rest of his stuff. Alter lord charged the doomwheel and spirit sworded the shit out of it. Wardancers quisinarted the giant rat pack. Treeman had a slap fight with the abom. and my glade guard block moonstoned across the board far from harms way and panicked the slaves away. We managed to get a 6 on the scenario die roll and the pain ended with my dryads victoriously holding the tower.
I'm not entirely sure that I would take the army that I played to 'Ard Boyz, but I do have an idea for an army that I may play:
Treeman ancient w/ annoyance of nettling and cluster of radiance
Treeman ancient w/ murder of spites
Level 2 mage with DMS
BSB w/ asyendi's bane, hail of doom arrow
Noble w/ hunters talon, pageant of shrikes
Treeman
Treeman
6 Treekin
20 Dryads with champ
10 Glade guard w/ banner of eternal flame
10 Glade guard w/ standard
9 Scouts w/ standard
10 Scouts w/ standard
No magic to speak of really there, but it is shooty and hard hitting in hand to hand. It's really just a matter of if I have enough GW models to do it, as you can't use non-GW models for 'Ard Boyz.

Alternate miniatures
By: Jay
Today I want to talk for a minute about alternate miniatures for Warhammer Fantasy. I know there are MANY people out there that believe that GW in the be-all, end-all of miniatures but I can tell you that this is in no way true. My main army is Wood Elves, and lets face it, the Treeman model is horrid. The Treekin look as bad, but they're smaller so it's not as noticeable. I personally refuse to use either of those models. I'm not a huge fan of the Treebeard model in the LotR range, so where does that leave me? Well there are so many mini makers out there these days that you really have to be trying to not find what you're looking for. For instance, my dilemma was solved by the good people at Reaper miniatures:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/Treeman.jpg
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/TreemanAncient.jpg
I picked these up for half the price of a GW Treeman. These Treemen are FAR better looking than the GW model, they actually look dangerous! Now for my Treeman Ancient I was using the one Reaper Treeman that I had painted white, but in my endless search for better minis I found this gorgeous guy:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/517.jpg
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/514.jpg
He's a Privateer Press Feral Warpwolf Extreme sculpt. This wasn't exactly a cost effective mini, but he really wasn't much more than the GW Treeman (Privateer Press has some fantastic minis in their entire range, and they still use metal!)
My Treekin I was torn on, I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do about them because I still had a few of the old GW Treeman sculpts from back in the early 90's and I was having trouble finding an alternative model that would fit in with them. I decided to not even try to find something that fit in and go with a look that made them look like a unit that was torn from different parts of the forest. I ended up with this guy first:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/TKChamp.jpg
Another Privateer Press sculpt, and eventually picked up these as a compliment to my new TM ancient:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r25/eadgbe0/Wolf-kinunit.jpg
These are examples from just one army of units that are completely useable as opposed to the GW norm. There are tons of places out there to find some great minis that are either affordable or fantastic looking and sometimes both. I personally despise plastics, and I hate the fact that GW is forcing everything into plastic sculpts. I hate that my minis are too light and I hate the lack of detail. These alternate minis are a wonderful solution to my problem. Here are some sites that I like to peruse from time to time just to see what they might have or to find something that might inspire me (Wild Riders mounted on sabretooth cats?):

If you have one you like leave a comment and I'll gladly add it to the list of links. I'd actually love to find more mini developers.

First Post!
By Jay:
For a first post I want to get off to a good start, so I'm going to talk about something positive and good. I'm not going to start this off as a bitch-fest.
I got the new Warhammer Orc and Goblin book the other day. I used to play the greenskins back in 4th and 5th editions. They were always a joy to play back then and the same pretty much has held true since then. They still have all the goffy stuff like fanatics and squig hoppers, but now with the new book release we see some new fun stuff.
First off we have mangler squigs. These things are NASTY! Think controllable fanatic that does more damage. At 65 points a piece they're a steal. I can't see my army ever going on the table with less than two of these bad boys. They're going to shine best against cavalry and heavily armored troops. Orcs and Goblins needed a little bit of something to deal with a Chaos chosen death star and these things are it.
Next we have savage orcs. No big surprise here, savage orcs have been a Warhammer staple forever. The nice thing about them now is the ability to restrain frenzy charge with 8th edition. They won't get yanked out of position so easily and they are tough as nails if outfitted correctly. My savages are currently running with a shaman in the unit holding the lucky shrunken head to get them up to a 5+ ward save. Make them your big 'un unit and they're a measly 12 points a piece. No real reason to not get a shit load of these guys.
Pump wagons have seen a nice little buffing. I wouldn't say that they are a staple now, but they are upgradeable to tailor what you need them for. I can see them working nicely in the right army.
Doom divers are still in, and they still do pretty much the same stuff. They're really point cost effective so I can see them as a staple to Orc and Goblin armies. They don't have a ton of stuff to deal with high armor saves so these guys are pretty much money for big armor armies like Dwarves and Chaos.
Trolls got a nice little change. you don't have to get stone or river trolls anymore. You can just get regular trolls for a nice little 35 points each. Super wound soakers with that regeneration.
Anyhow, I'm kinda ramblin on with crap you can go read anywhere. Lemme toss the list I'm going to be playing up and you can judge for yourself if they look workable. Orcs an Goblins still have the same problems they had before as far as leadership and animosity, so if you feel like you need something in a Orc and Goblin army you should really make room to get two of 'em.
Black orc general
Basha's axe
Enchanted shield
Talisman of preservation
Savage orc level 4 shaman
Lucky shrunken head
Fencer's blade
Goblin level 3 shaman
DMS
Channeling Staff
Black orc BSB
Shield
Armor of destiny
38 savage orc big un's
FC
Extra hand weapon
Big stabba
20 night goblins
Boss and standard
Netters
3 fanatics
20 night goblins
Standard
S-bow
3 fanatics
15 spider riders
Musician and standard
6 trolls
25 black orcs
FC
Shields
Banner of swiftness
2 doom divers
2 rock lobbers
2 mangler squigs
That is a 3K that I'm going to be playing in my next game. Savage orc shammy is going to actually try to be a combat effective piece. Really wanted to make room for a giant because they are just so much goddam fun to play with, but whatever, maybe next time.
