So I apparently fail at compiling thoughts well enough to do an updated post more than once every six months. It's a new year though, so here's hoping that I can try to keep on a fairly regular schedule. Honestly what has been keeping me from playing around on the internet is gaming, which really is a good thing in my opinion. I'm gonna toss a few video games out first just more as shout outs really.
Arkham City- If you don't have this game and you are any sort of a comic book fan you should go grab it right now. It isn't especially hard, but the story is pretty kool, and the fighting sequences are done incredibly well. Lots and lots of puzzle games and side stuff to do. has a very batmany feel about it all together.
Star Wars: The Old Republic- It's an MMO, so it has all of the standard MMO problems/ features as far as gameplay. The real selling point of this game for me however is the storyline. It is a really deep and well told story that makes you want to continue on with your quests to see what happens. We'll see if it has the staying power of WoW. For now it has my attention though.
Ok, on to mini gaming. I gave up on Orc and Goblins. Not due to any fault of the book, I really do think that it is a fantastic book that is amazingly well balanced. The main reason was that it was going to cost me way to much money to get a competitive army together. I had a ton of crap bought but I was still at least $500.00 away from what I was needing to get. I traded the O&G off to a good friend of mine for his Beastman army and have not been disappointed thus far. They're a lot of fun to play and have the same sort of O&G feel to them. Their monsters are kinda lame, but they're still fun to bring if you know they aren't going to get massacred by the sniping artillery of 8th ed. Core chariots are fantastic, minotaurs are beastly, they just have a great diversity in the troop choices. the main problem I'm having with them is the aesthetic feel of the army. I can only paint so much fur before it loses it's appeal.
so how does one get over the 'painters block' when the love is lost for what you're working on? Do something different. I picked up some Ogre Kingdoms stuff. Fantastic models that incorporate humor and danger. The Firebelly is one of the best models to come out in the last year. The mournfang cav is eye-catching if not the best sculpts that they could be. The troops themselves are wonderful and reasonably easy to assemble. All this on top of an army that plays really well and I was sold. the poor Wood Elves aren't looking to get an update for about another year (just in time to be outdated for 9th edition), so when the game won't comply with your wishes make lemonade out of lemons.
After one game with them thus far I'm sold. It is just such a fun army to run that I'm a little upset that I didn't start them before the Beastmen really. As I get a few more games under my belt I'll try to have a few reports up, but for now I have to say that GW did good by them.
